Entrepreneurial initiative with a £50k prize fund launches in Croydon Region

The local business community came together to launch the entrepreneurial initiative Young Start-up Talent in Croydon on Tuesday 2nd December at Fairfield Halls.
Any 16 – 25 year old living, working or studying within the Croydon area is legible to enter this free competition with the opportunity of winning the £50k prize fund worth of products and services to assist them to start their own business.
The Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed, launched the project and said “It is a privilege to be here at the launch of Young Start-up Talent in Croydon, it’s great to bring the community together. As a Mayor, we hope to get young people involved in projects and as a community we can work together to achieve this. I support local jobs for local people. It’s great to see so many local businesses here to support, you’re doing a great job and good luck to the project in the borough. ‘
This is the first year that Young Start-up Talent have run the initiative in Croydon, attracting sponsors from local businesses including, Owadally & King, the Croydon Advertiser, Fairfield Halls, Coast to Capital, RBS, Fastsigns, Croydon Chamber of Commerce, Croydon BID and Amicus who are all contributing to the prize fund.
The launch was a chance for sponsors, judges and the wider business community to meet and network for the first time and to look forward to inspiring and encouraging 16 to 25 year olds in the area to start up in business.
Guest speakers included Daryl Gaylor – Director for the South East for RBS saying ‘’There is a genuine passion within RBS and we feel we should be sharing some of our experiences with the young people. We are excited to see Young Start-up Talent launch in Croydon and we look forward to supporting it for many years to come.”
The audience heard from two young entrepreneurs who have been working with the team at Young Start-up Talent from other areas and shared their success. One was Eden Tiltman who run a business called BALES Care Agency who won the prize fund in West Kent in June of this year. Another was Sam French of Sam’s Kitchen and winner of the Gatwick Diamond 2012 prize fund. Both spoke of their experience of going through the process and how their businesses have progressed.
Other speakers at the event included: Cecila Newell of Fairfield Halls, Melanie Martinez of Fast Signs, with hosts Matt Turner and Lorraine Nugent informing the attendees of the developments for the year ahead along with the announcement of this years’ judges.
Launch of Young Start-up Talent Croydon Region 2015
The judges were announced as: Mark Burgess – Director of Corporate and Commercial in Croydon for Royal Bank of Scotland, Simon Maddox – Partner at Owadally & King, Glenn Ebrey – Editor of the Croydon Advertiser, Stephen Mason – Managing Director of Mason Consulting along with the two founding partners, Lorraine Nugent and Matt Turner.
Melanie Martinez from Fastsigns and long term sponsor of the initiative commented “It’s a great feeling to be part of something that really does make a difference to so many people. Over the years we have seen not only the winners reap the benefits of the prize fund, but also some runners up have gone on to get their business off the ground with the help of Young Start-up Talent’s connections, as well as apprenticeship and investment opportunities. This just goes to show that taking that first brave step and submitting an entry form does pay off.”
This being the first time that Young Start-up Talent has worked in the Croydon area, we have three new judges on the panel – Mark Burgess, Simon Maddox and Glenn Ebrey. Simon commented ‘As a practise Odawally & King has always wanted to give back to our local community and to share our experiences with the youngsters of Croydon really excites us. O&K and I are really looking forward to getting involved with the local schools, together with our staff. We are also looking forward to learning from the youngsters and making some new friends.’
